Don’t get me wrong, I love traditional candles! What I don’t love are the flame soot on my walls, the way some candles melt unevenly, and even the danger of a lit candle in my house (which is overrun with four children, two cats and a dog).
One of technology’s recent innovations is the battery operated candle. These candles can be made with real wax, but the light is generated from LED bulbs powered by batteries. These special LED bulbs flicker like a real flame, so you get the feeling of real shimmering candles.
They come “pre-lit,” that is, the candle center shows an area that has been “melted,” just like the flame burned down into the wax. The wick is dark, as thought it had been lit by a flame!
You can get any style of battery operated candles, from the pillars we know and love, to the tall, elegant tapers (like you might put on your dining room table for romance), to tea lights and votives. You can even find solar operated hanging lanterns for entertaining on the deck in the evening. Another innovation is the submersible candle, including a “water lily” candle that floats on water. The water lily lights when it comes in contact with water, a lovely idea for a wedding or other formal occasion.
