Attention Span or Reading – Which is important?

A recent research by Oregon State University says that paying attention helps more than reading or math to graduate college. Megan McClelland, the child development researcher from OSU has provided the proofs that the behavioral abilities are more crucial than the academic skills for the preschool student’s success in the future academics such as graduation. She and her team of specialists discovered the correlation between Attention Span and College Success Success after tracking 430 children.
Early Teaching of Academic Skills:
McClelland said that the students are pushed by teaching the academic skills. He also said that their study taught them that the reading skills and math didn’t play the role of completing college but paying attention was the big factor to do so. The study started when the students were at the age of four. The parents were requested to track their children’s activities to test their ability to fight against a problem. And the parents tracked the academic achievements for years. After 17 years, the students were tested again. It was a surprise to the team that the results showed the children with the ability to pay attention have greater chance to complete college. So we can easily understand that “attention span” is more important than “reading and math”.
